First Chrome OS powered tablet launches ahead of rumoured Apple iPad revealTHE first tablet powered by Google’s Chrome OS has been launched ahead of an expected Apple iPad announcement today.Google’s Chrome OS runs on many different devices, but until now has not featured on a tablet computer.But that has all changed with the newly announced Acer Chromebook Tab 10, which marks the first tablet ever to run Chrome OS.The Chrome OS-powered laptop has been announced just one day before Apple is rumoured to reveal a new, cheaper iPad.The latest iPad is expected to be unveiled by Apple at an education-focused event, with invites saying “let’s take a field trip”.And the Chromebook Tab 10, like the rumoured new iPad, is targeting students in the classroom.The Tab 10 has a 9.7-inch 2048 x 1536 display just like the iPad, and also boasts an estimated nine hours of battery life.It comes with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (that can be expanded with a microSD slot) and a headphone jack.The Chrome OS-powered tablet also features a 2MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera.Google published a blog post yesterday announcing the Chromebook Tab 10.
The post began by saying that elementary students got to test out the Chromebook Tab 10 at a school in Cupertino, which is where Apple is based.It went on to say: “Since their debut, schools have chosen Chromebooks because they are fast, easy-to-use and manage, shareable, secure and affordable.“We’ve listened carefully to feedback from educators around the world, and one common theme is that they want all the benefits of Chromebooks in a tablet form.“Starting today, with the new Acer Chromebook Tab 10, we’re doing just that.“It’s the first education tablet made for Chrome OS, and gives schools the easy management and shareability of Chromebook laptops.“With touch and stylus functionality, this lightweight device is perfect for students creating multimedia projects—and also comes with a world of immersive experiences with Google Expeditions
